Periodontal diagnosis

What are the causes of periodontal disease?

The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque. Plaque irritates the gums and generally leads to an inflammation of the gums, which causes the jawbone to recede. Through this process even healthy, caries-free teeth can be lost in a very short time.

The risk of periodontal disease is higher among smokers and people with poor oral hygiene. Recent literature indicates that periodontal disease can also be hereditary, since the rate of the disease within some families is substantially higher than among other families. The latest studies show that about 80% of the European adult population suffer from periodontal disease.

Due to our specialization in microbial periodontal diagnostics and the diagnostics of your personal caries activity, we can determine your risk of periodontal disease through a simple genetic saliva test first, and then select the optimal dental treatment for you. Considering the fact that people over 40 years of age lose more teeth through periodontal disease than through caries, we believe it is worthwhile to do something about it.
