Topic:
"Experimental studies of biocompatibility of new titanium alloys".
Grade:
magna cum laude
Research Program:
This thesis was part of an interdisciplinary German
Research project. With respect to the fundamental research being done with titanium alloys (Prof. Dr. Branemark, Prof. Dr. Albrektsson, Prof. Dr. L. Sennerby and others) at the Sahlgren University of Gothenburg, this thesis was part of a german-wide research project with several universities involved which was funded by the German Research Association (DFG). One center of research on titanium alloys at that time was the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. The program lasted for five years and significantly contributed to the recommendation of titanium alloys for implant dentistry. During this thesis I became familiar with the essential literature and research activities and results at Sahlgren University in Gothenburg. These data were the scientific basis on which my thesis was built.
Summary:
In a controlled and randomized study in rats, three new titanium alloys were evaluated for their bone regeneration potential. Commercially pure titanium, TI6Al4V and TI5Al2.5Fe showed comparable histomorphometrical results after 2, 3 and 4 months. Based on the results of Branemark & Albrektsson and co-workers this was a significant finding since at that time titanium as implant material was challenged by Al2O3 ceramic materials. It could be shown
that surface chemistry did not have a fundamental effect on the quantitative osseoregeneration result. On the other hand, it was proven that both titanium alloys could be industrially used in the future to manufacture smaller and thinner implants, thus enlarging the scale of indication of dental implants significantly.

Summary:
In a sophisticated epidemiological and anatomical study, medieval crania were investigated clinically and radiologically. They were calibrated with modern dental methods to evaluate the influence of nutrition, premature cavitiy incidence and periodontal morbidity on the development of midfacial structures. It was found that nutrition and early attrition of dental structures as well as premature tooth loss significantly influences juvenile development of craniofacial anatomy. A new index for anthropology and comparing anatomy was developed which facilitates today the cultural classification and the origin of human findings in anthropology and archaeology.

Foundation and President of the IZAK
(Interdisciplinary Dental Study Club Germany)
This study club is a certified educational association and represents the first interdisciplinary study club in Germany uniting medical and dental as well as natural science disciplines. The focus of the study club which offers for its members and under the presidency of Vis. Prof. Dr. Dr. Valentin yearly repetitoria and curricula for the continuing professional education is based on implantology functional diagnostics and therapy as well as other disciplines like craniomandibular disorders and endodontics. The members obligate themselves to a yearly quality review of their work. In order to facilitate this quality control system, an efficient QM management has been introduced by the president according to the new professional laws in Germany. The coordination of the new hygiene guidelines forced a network of the members with mutual benefits in buying, organizing and restructuring their daily work. The future goal of the study club is a general state certification. The other purpose of the IZAK is to offer a communication platform for both private practioners and universities. In this respect regular symposia are organized (see below) to improve the scientific and educational cooperation.
2003
Institute of Oral Surgery Mannheim IFOM
The Institute is managing my lecture programs as well as my research projects (see below). It also represents a connection between the office and the Study Club IZAK. The Institute is responsible for the regular publications in various journals, professional travel arrangements, administration of conferences and communication tool with supporting companies and other associations. It also organizes and administrates educational programs for affiliated dental offices.
2006
TÜV ISO Certification
acc. to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 No 0 100 06 07 10
Due to the new quality control laws in Germany, I saw the need for
detailed documentation of all procedures in the office and to introduce a strict management system. The new hygiene guidelines of the German Ministry of Health (RKI) forces universities and private practioners to massively rebuild their workplaces as well as reorganize and document all procedures of professional activities. Therefore I decided to achieve the highest possible degree of office management, hygiene and management control possible which is documented as the TÜV ISO Certificate. This is a worldwide standard of quality and our office, institute and dental clinic are among the first to obtain this certificate
2007
Private Dental Hospital Mannheim
This private clinic is one of the largest and most modern private dental hospitals in Germany
. It represents an enlargement of the present office and Institute for Oral Surgery into a ward with five apartments, a surgical department and a department for prosthetics and functional therapy and diagnostics. This clinic will be finished in October 2007 and will also exhibit a scientific board of leading scientists.
